According to the Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), less than one in three immigrants in Finland has an advanced level of Finnish or Swedish. The project aims to create the top digital language learning game for immigrants, mainstream classrooms, and private consumers.
Many games used in education today run aground on the build-up. Games are launched without taking the curriculum into account, and it may not have been investigated what kind of functions the teachers and students would like to have.
Studies show that students partly experience greater control over their learning, and partly feel that they know what to do when gamification is used in teaching – it’s simply about the design behind the pedagogy. The gaming industry has succeeded in making these tasks structured.
Gamification can make the didactic triangle more natural and logical as the students easily understand what they have to do, when the task must be finished, and why they need to learn a certain thing.
With elements from the gaming world, the tasks can become both more interesting and more motivating, said Adam Palmquist, author of ” The gamified classroom and the digitized classroom”.

SPROK’s design encourages growth in the Finnish and international community by developing linguistic skills as a core class material in mainstream and immigrant classrooms.
Workbooks and SPROK are both intended for in-class and homework usage. This is why it must be accessible on mobile and desktop devices. This design makes it well-suited for private consumer use as well.
We work differently in creating a game with a user-centered design that relies on the curriculum for preparatory teaching and language learning for immigrants.

SPROK uses the target language to teach itself. This means it can be used in classrooms without a base language, making it suitable for immigrants and native students.
Conversational skills are taught via contextually relevant interaction in the game environment. These will be adapted to each language culture and environment.
SPROK will create feedback for teachers so they can better understand student’s language progression. Teachers will also be able to use it as an assignment, making it easily integrated into lesson planning.
European-based standards for in-game progression mean that it can be used to teach multiple languages throughout Europe.

Digital learning games have been used to enhance a variety of outcomes, including language acquisition, motivation, and student confidence. They can provide immediate feedback, differentiated instruction, and a safe environment for students to practice the target language.
A digital language learning game (DLLG) for mobile and desktop devices, SPROK is being developed by an experienced research team from Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) and Novia University of Applied Sciences (Novia UAS).

Does it have to be difficult to learn something new? Successful learning is more about motivation and feedback. What we need is something that benefits the educational process.
The gaming industry has succeeded well by interdisciplinary involving motivational psychology, cognition, and neuroscience to make us motivated, and the school world in turn needs to get better at that.
We need to start talking about motivation and engagement with our teachers and everyone involved in instructional design. Teaching has no seriousness to lose by investing in gamification, rather it is about raising the students’ motivation. The project group works with children as the main target group. The idea is that the game should have various levels that can be adapted to the user’s skills.
Everyone, regardless of age, can use the game, choose the difficulty level, and advance at their own pace.
